Hello everyone: I'm just wondering how many of you may have seen the first segment of tonight's "60 Minutes" featuring the story of a pilot who lost his life because of maintenance error on his aircraft. Early in the segment, his mother was interviewed, and she was a picture of kindness, repose, and forgiveness. Only in the last minutes of the segment was her name mentioned: Lois Lowry. It was the honest-to-goodness Newbery author, and I can only imagine that she requested to be known in the interview as the pilot's mother, not a famous author. I just dug out the picture taken of me and Mrs. Lowry at a book signing last year. Yes, this is indeed the woman in tonight's interview. I am still glowing with the warmth and peace which she generated on screen, especially in the wake of our school's losing a sixth grader to a fatal flu last week. I feel much better about walking into work tomorrow now that I've seen Lois Lowry's reaction to the needless death of her own son. I hope that many of you saw the interview. If not, look for it in summer reruns. It is most amazing.
