Here are the replies I have received so far about Dewey numbers for
poetry. As you can see, the .008's have varying interpretations.
You're a great group. I wonder what Wilson, Follett, Baker and Taylor,
etc. might have to say?

1. Well 008's are used for collections of anything in Wilson's Sr. High
School Library Catalog. 812.008 - collections of plays, 811.008,
collections of poems, etc. But the thing to do is make up your mind and
just stick with it. Then everytime you see a 008, you know it’s an
anthology, or a work by a single author, or a criticism. It is a huge
help. The reason I use a .5 for criticism is: criticisms are cataloged
by when the poet/writer lived. Well, who cares? So when I see a .5, I
know it’s a criticism.
----
2. Any cataloguing must reflect the collection and the user.
Cataloguing poetry is not so difficult in that light. 811 (North
American Poetry), 811.08 (Collections of North American Poetry with a
variety of poets' works), 811.5, etc. only if you have a large
collection and need a time frame. Same for 821, by adding the time
(821.1 for Chaucer) if the collection is large or you have an active
English Literature History course. I tend to disagree with some of the
anthology cataloguing in that I find the user might not locate an
anthology of poetry (mainly by British poets, but including a range of
others) in the 821.008 number, so I put all anthologies of mixed
nationalities in the 808.81 number. By the way, the "Third Line" system
works great for large collection of English Literature (821.1 Cha for
works by Chaucer and 821.1 Cha Abc for works about him)
----
3. You use 808.81 for a collection of poems by a several authors from a
variety of countries. Use 811 for a collection of poems by one American
author (i.e., Collected poems by Robert Frost); likewise, use 821 for a
collection of poems by one British author (i.e., Collected poetry of
Elizabeth Barrett Browning). Use 811.08 for a collection of poems by
several American authors (i.e., Oxford book of modern American poetry).
I know that 811.008 is the new number replacing 811.08, but we haven't
recataloged that section -- and I don't know if I feel like doing it! I
hope this helps!
----
4. Here is an easy way:
808.81 - anthology of poetry, world authors, no single nationality
811 - single American author, i.e. whole book of poetry by
           Longfellow
        811.08 - chuck that number
811.008 - anthology of American authors
I also made evey criticism of an American poet 811.5
Our library has been around since the 1920’s. The Dewey numbers were
wandering alittle, so I went through the collectiona and compared them
to those at NY Public library and those at the Library of Congress.
Then I changed them. It works for us.

5. (phone message) 808.81 is for collections of poetry from more than
one culture. 811 is for American poetry (single author). 821 is English
poetry. Adding .08 makes it a collection of poetry by various poets in
one language. Doesn't use .008

How have you handled AUP for elementary students? Our Tech committee is
in the process of developing an AUP for the district and the issue of
elementary students signing something that they don"t understand has
come up. Please share any thoughts! Thanks, as usual.
