MID: picture books for middle school

If you'd just been given a windfall of 800-1000 dollars,
what Picture Books would you buy for a middle school (grade 6 - 8)?
This is a fairly sophisticated community, but the sense of verve and
spirit normally found in Picture Books is not apparent in this tired
collection.
I've been using my own (private) stash of books to entice the art and
reading teachers, and now I've got money to actually purchase for the
school library.
