Dear LM_NET Colleagues,

A "final" test of LM_Conf, a realtime virtual conference and panel
discussion is planned for January 14th. It is co-sponsored by LM_NET and
the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and is hosted by
the Information Institute of Syracuse (home of AskERIC). This event is
the fourth in a series of tests of LM_Conf, realtime conferences using
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) software.

The panel discussion features three panelists: Linda Bertland, Kathy
Schrock, and Peter Milbury.

In order to participate, you will need to download IRC Chat software.
This is explained in detail at: http://chat.syr.edu
  Login as a registered user,
    with the userid: lm
    the password is: live

This will take you to the LM_Live page. Just follow the instructions
given there to download and configure the software. (In the event that you
are unable to download the software from there, look for the chat clients
at http://shareware.com)

Since this is a test, it is limited to the first 150 persons who get there
and get logged in. It is recommended that you obtain the software well
ahead of time, and practice in the LM_Chat room.

For those who are interested in joining us as audience/participants, here
is some more information on the event.

Panel Discussion Opener:
Panelists (Linda Bertland, Kathy Schrock, and Peter Milbury) address how
a Web page fits into functions we already perform: selection, reference,
local resources, curriculum support, information skills instruction.

Panelists will then respond to moderator questions, such as:

* Is creating and maintaining a Web page now a priority for a school
librarian?
* What are the benefits--to students, faculty, community?
* How do you manage the extra time and responsibility?
* Is it a good idea to have student help?
* What are the essential elements? What types of resources should/might be
included?
* Is it possible to make things too easy for students?
* Do we bookmark lists of lists for teachers, and let them evaluate on
their own, or do we lead them right to what we think is good for them?
* Do we cover both sides of controversial issues, as we do when we
purchase?

Timeline and Schedule:
Between now and January 14th, go to the LM_Live! website and download the
appropriate software for chatting. Practice by entering the LM_Chat area
and trying to chat with someone. If you are alone, try saying something
to yourself.
