Thanks for the quick responses.  As many may already know in hockey as well
as many other sports three consecutive goals  referred to as a "hat trick"
and fans throw hats on to the ice.  We were looking for why it was called
hat trick and if why it was after three.

Jim Haskins shared the following info:

Hat trick originates in Great Britain.
If a pitcher (bowler) of a cricket team retired three hitters in a row
the pitcher's team would by him a new hat.
