TECH: program similar to chat

A while back someone mentioned a program similar to chat, but especially
useful for two people.  I think they said something about staying in touch
with children at college.  I saved it for a while, then deleted, and of
course now I'd like to look into it.  I looked in the archives, but wasn't
successful.  If anyone remembers the message or knows the program, I'd
appreciate hearing about it.
