I've found the most useful site for our 8th grade science classes is
Web-Elements, the Periodic Table on the WWW, maintained by Mark Winter of the
University of Sheffield, England at:

http://www.shef.ac.uk/chemistry/web-elements/

This site has extremely detailed information on all aspects of the elements.

Another one is The Periodic Table of the Elements on the Internet, maintained
by Yinon Bentor at:

http://domains.twave.net/users/yinon/default.html

The information on each element isn't as complete as in Mark Winter's table,
but this one does include some information on the groups.
