I am glad that it did not win the Newbery because everyone would have
run out and purchased it without knowing it.  The book is powerful -
I had a strong emotional response to it (a testament to Spinelli) but
I do not feel it is for everyone.  The whole subject of a whole town
being wrapped up in a cruel event and people feeling they can't speak
out against it is scary - I have even heard it likened to the
Holocaust (not that I agree with that).  The book is incredibly
powerful and well written - just be careful with it.
