I was reading comments about library qualifications and saw in Peter's
message that someone said that there was a library program at Vanderbilt.
They do not offer a MLS there anymore. That was cut out about a year after I
graduated in 1985. UT Knoxville still has a master's program. Tennessee does
not require a MLS for a school library job, just certification which
involves (I think) 27 additional hours of coursework in library science. It
is true that the field is getting a little thin. The appreciation for school
librarians is low also even if you are a wonderful librarian and do
everthing you're supposed to do!! I have been asked if I had to have a real
teaching degree to be a librarian. And of course, there was my all time
favorite comment that the librarian was just as important as the janitor
around school. OOOOHHHHH, thanks for the pat on the back!! Don't get me
wrong, I love my job but it gets depressing sometimes that people don't
understand what librarians really do. I know classroom teachers who have
switched to the library and then the next year switched back in total shock
not knowing what was really involved in library work. Oh, well. So much for
that!!!Anybody else have any war stories about lack of appreciation????
