During National Poetry Month (April is the cruelest month) a 6th grade teacher and I worked together for poetry sessions in the library one a week during the entire month--we covered a large table 3' by 6' with butcher paper, white or light colored, and invited students to write their own poetry or their favorite poetry by another author onto the paper. We put a big title with the date in the center before starting--and then posted the poetry in the hall outside the library. Good response with students looking over the paper. And, of course the poetry was written all which way as the students stood around the table. We also collaborated, the 6th grade teacher and I, in getting students to submit bits of favorite poetry to the daily bulletin--a poem a day for the entire month--either their poetry or someone else's.
