We are still searching for libraries (public/private school libraries or
public libraries) in Vermont (Book Bear was made at the Vermont Teddy Bear
Factory), Maine, Nevada and Idaho to host the McHenry Book Bear for 1998-1999.
I hope to select sites as soon as possible and have a schedule set up before
late July. If you might be interested in participating in this wonderful
project, please read below. Provided proposals are accepted, the 1997-1998
program may be presented at the International Reading Association conference
in San Diego in May 1999, the Title 1 Supervisors meeting in New Orleans in
Jan. 1999, and at the Georgia Childrens Literature Conference in April 1999.
A proposal has already been accepted to present at the Ga. Council of Media
Organizations conference in Macon, Ga. in Oct. or Nov. of 1998.

The 1997-1998 McHenry Book Bear Project was a success! Thanks to all of the
36 host sites in 36 different states, Book Bear (BB) had a grand time and
arrived back in Rome, Georgia on Saturday, May 16, 1998 after a nine month
journey. And believe it or not…we are going to do it again in 1998-99. We
had so many responses for Book Bear to visit that we are going to receive
requests from places again for Book Bear to visit. The new Book Bear is named
"McHenrietta" Book Bear…and if you cannot tell…it is a girl Book Bear. She is
the sister to McHenry Book Bear. If you would like to see her, check out
McHenry Book Bear's web site at:

http://www.fcboe.ga.net/floyd/bookbear.htm

McHenrietta's picture is at the bottom of the web page. You can read about
McHenry Book Bear, his journal, see some pix, read more about the 1997-98
program, etc. Everything will be pretty much the same, but please read below
to find out some of the guidelines.

Each host site must mail BB to the next site on the Friday of the week she
will visit. For instance, if for some reason BB arrives on a Wednesday (or
Thursday)…she must still be mailed on that Friday.

Each host site takes the responsibility to mail BB to his next host site AT
LEAST 2nd day air via UPS, FED EX, US Postal, etc. We tried all three
services and had problems with all…none are any better/worse than the other.
If schools can afford it, sending BB so she arrives on Monday would be best.
I will try to arrange the schedule to keep Book Bear within an area and not
jump across the country. Last year, Mail Boxes, Etc. in several sites donated
sending BB to the next host site…way to go Mail Boxes, Etc. ! If you have a
MBE where you are located…they may do it too.

Each selected host site must send me a schedule for the school year before the
end of June so I can set up BB's itinerary. The main dates/holidays/breaks I
will be looking at are: beginning and ending of school year, Thanksgiving,
Christmas/Winter Break, and Spring Break. If your school is closed for a one-
day holiday I will probably will not take that into account.

Each selected host site is requested to send pictures of BB's visit to McHenry
Elementary School.

Each contact person at selected host sites will be requested to send me their
school name, address, phone, fax (to fax BB's student record sheet on Monday);
as well as, e-mail and home addresses so I can get all info. in your hands
ASAP. Home information will not be posted on the web address. Addresses to
schools and e-mail will be shared with selected host sites in case they need
to contact one of the selected sites.

Some things I will be looking for in selecting sites include, but are not
limited to: activities going on at your school or activities planned for BB,
something interesting about your school, location, whether or not the contact
person at the school is a media specialist, whether or not the contact person
has e-mail, etc. I will give priority to states that the 1997-1998 Book Bear
did not visit. These states include: Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Iowa,
Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma,
South Dakota, Tennessee, and Vermont (this is the state that BB was made in at
the Vermont Teddy Bear Co…there is a link to their web site on BB's web page)

I will send a packet of info. to each selected host site around August 1,
1998. Information sent out will be very similar to info. contained on the
current BB's web site.

I received over 112 requests to host McHenry Book Bear. Due to the number of
requests I will probably only reply to those sites who are selected as host
sites. I will post a reply on LM_NET and let selected host sites know by the
end of June.

If you have any
questions, please e-mail me.

Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from those interested in
hosting…McHenrietta Book Bear, Book Bear for 1998-1999
