Four rules for every library:

1. Be quiet--this is a place for reading.
2. Take care of the materials--so there will be lots of things for everyone to
read and enjoy.
3. Put everything in its proper place--so we all can find what we want when we
want and need it.
4. Wait your turn--so we will all have a turn.
I have a poster of these rules (just the rule, not the explanation) on the
wall. Then I spend the first visit for grades 2-4 reviewing the rules for libraries
everywhere and letting the students give me the explanations. However, for 1st
grade, I spend one visit each on each rule.
I think it is important to stress with the students that you are teaching them
library rules that apply in ANY library. Later you will give similar universal
lessons for the Dewey system and the computer catalogs so that your students can be
competent library patrons wherever they may go. If the rule or the lesson applies
only to your library, it is probably a waste of time for you and your students.
