Dear Colleagues,
Is anyone besides me bothered by the fact that some of the "big" book
publishers/distributors do not furnish catalog card kits and/or MARC
records for their titles? In this age of technology when so many
libraries are automated (and if they're not, need catalog cards), it is
amazing that some still do not make these basic services available. And
the problem is even worse when you order video and other media
resources. I am sure that there are other markets for these products
besides libraries which do not need these services, but I can't help but
think that with many of these titles, such as those high-priced
reference books, libraries would be the big customers. Maybe I am
wrong, but you would think that these companies would like to keep those
who control the purchasing happy. (That would be us.) Those of us who
have limited help and very little time greatly appreciate this service.
I simply do not have time to type cards and/or create my own MARC
records for several titles. (One of my libraries is automated, the
other is not yet.) When given a choice, I will order from a jobber like
Follett instead of directly from one of these companies because Follett
can provide these services. The only problem is that some titles can
only be purchased directly from the publisher. Yes, I know there are
some companies who will sell records if you send them a list, like
Catalog Card Corp. I do utilize their service, but this, too, takes
time to order and then you have to wait to receive the records. Also,
some records can't be provided by them either. If reps. from any of
those companies are lurking out there, please suggest to "whoever" that
librarians want and need these services. It would be greatly
appreciated. And to those who have always made these services available
or have recently begun to provide them, a big thank-you. You can count
on me as a customer!
