FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Audrey Gorman Voice: (312) 280-4027 Fax: (312) 944-8085 E-mail: agorman@ala.org "Why Children Succeed or Fail at Reading" The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) has prepared a brief summary of research findings on why children succeed or fail at reading, how children likely to fail can be identified, and what approaches work best for teaching reading to all children. To obtain fifty (50) free copies of "Why Children Succeed or Fail at Reading," a three page, illustrated piece, call the NICHD Clearinghouse at 1-800-370-2943 or send a faxed request to 301-496-7101. These research findings were presented by Dr. Reid Lyon of NICHD as part of the Roads To Learning program at the 1998 American Library Association Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. The program was entitled "Reading and Young People: From Research to the Real World," and was co-sponsored by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA), and the Young Adult Library Services Association. Also at the Roads To Learning/ALA program, a panel of youth services librarians presented real world solutions to working with youngsters with reading difficulties. The panel consisted of Cindy Martin, the District of Columbia Public Library; Kathie Matsil, Meriden Connecticut Public Library; and Eveyln Novins, the Lab School of Washington. For more information on the program, the research, or learning disabilities and libraries, call Audrey Gorman, Director, Roads To Learning, at 1-800-545-2433 ext. 4027 or send e-mail to agorman@ala.org. A list of other NICHD informational materials, such as "The Alphabetic Principle and Learning to Read" and "Getting Ready to Read: Learning How Print Maps to Speech" can also be obtained by contacting the NICHD Clearinghouse at 1-800-370-2943 or send a faxed request to 301-496-710. ### posted by: Steven Hofmann Coordinator of Communications American Association of School Librarians a division of the American Library Association 50 E.
