So far from home [Dear America series] by Barry Denenberg This is a fictional diary of an Irish girl who comes to America in 1847 to work in the mills. She describes the famine in Ireland, the harsh trip over, and what it was like to work in the mills. Prejudice agains the Irish is also covered. Scholastic has a hit with this series and I will try to get them all. The books in this series all have a nice historical narrative at the end to give the reader some information about the period covered. This would be a good companion to Lyddie by Paterson which is also about the life of a girl in the same mills. I picked this 166 page book in our Book Fair. *** Frederick Muller fmuller@planet.net Halsted Middle School Library (973) 383-7440 ext.228 59 Halsted Street FAX (973) 383-7432 Newton, NJ 07860 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= To quit LM_NET (or set NOMAIL or DIGEST), Send an email message to listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write EITHER: 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST * NOTE: Please allow time for confirmation from Listserv.
