Dear LM_NETTERS, I am in desparate need of some creative thinking or previous experience. The faculty at my K-5 school of about 500 students decided last September to do away with flexible scheduling in the library in favor of a guaranteed 40 minute planning time 5 days a week. A 4-day rotation was adopted for the 4 "specials" - Art, Music, PE, and Library. With four sections of each grade level, that translates into all day, every day with scheduled classes. For a full school year the library has dealt with teachers and students who don't know from week to week what their library day is or when to return books. The overdue list is staggering! Discipline problems increased because students who don't return books are not allowed to check out new ones. The feeling has been one of lack of equilibrium - teachers plans generally run for a week but I see one class on each level twice a week. "Voting" time is upon us again and our principal says if you vote against the 4-day rotation you must have a suggestion of something better - and returning to the old plan is not acceptable! Please HELP me think of a plan! Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
