Do any of you have a policy on internet use and students in grades 1-4?
The Technology Teacher and I are trying to establish guidelines for when
students may use the Internet, where it should be accessed ( lab,
library, classroom), who will supervise student access, etc.

Do you allow “recreational surfing” by students this age during recess,
before or after school, or during library visits?

Do you require a “driving license”(special series of lessons on
accessing the Internet) and student and parent signed use policy form?

How do you have elementary students cite pictures down loaded for the
Internet? URL plus date visited???

At what grade level are the students allowed to do independent research
on the Internet? How do you make sure they have chosen the best place
(classroom, library, lab) and source to start research (books, CD ROM,
Internet, other)?

We are developing a scope and sequence for telecommunications for the
students in grades 1-4. Beginning in first grade we emphasize
intellectual property rights. We introduce e-mail in second grade (in
terms of using it to contact experts and keypals under supervision of an
adult), URL’s bookmarks, and browser and web site environment navigation
in third, where they are just beginning keyboarding instruction , and
search engines and searching in fourth. We believe that the fourth grade
by second semester will have the tools to search the Internet somewhat
independently but we think that is the earliest.

The problem is that the Technology Teacher has experienced second
graders sent to the lab to ask for help in searching the Internet for
let's say, quartz. The material gathered from the web is often at too
hard a reading level and takes a great deal of time to find taking the
Technology Teacher away from other tasks and classes. And the fact is
that the library may have had a print or CD ROM source more appropriate.

We believe our guidelines should indicate that the student be sent to
the library to find information and the Technology Teacher assist the
teachers with implementing whole group types of guided activities when
using the Internet with grades 1-4 .

What is your way of doing things? The lab and library are two floors
apart at our school, if we were together this probably wouldn’t be such
an issue.

We think we know where we want to go with this (not hurry the
kids(individually) on to the Internet just because we have it but we
would like to hear from other elementary schools --any suggestions??
Thanks
