AUSTRALIAN TRAINING PROJECT
WINS IASL/SIRS COMMENDATION AWARD

SEATTLE, May 25, 1998=8BThe Australian School Library National Capital
Territory has been awarded the IASL/SIRS Commendation Award for 1998. The
award recognizes 'outstanding and innovative projects, plans or programs
that which could serve as models for replication' by other associations and
individuals. A plaque and a cash award of US $500 will be presented at the
27th annual IASL conference in Ramat-Gan, Israel.

The Australian School Library Association National Capital Territory chapter
developed COMPUTERS, RESEARCH AND STUDENTS: A SURVIVAL KIT FOR TEACHERS AND
PARENTS , a "train the trainer" kit for preparing teacher-librarians to
present workshops to teachers and parents about carrying out research
projects in an electronic information environment in such a way that student
projects exemplify, not "cut and paste" or plagiarism, but authentic and
meaningful learning experiences.

In making the announcement, Sigrun Hannesdottir, President of the IASL,
noted the long history of Australian leadership in teacher-librarianship and
innovative approaches to professional development and information literacy.
It is not at all unusual then that the award for 1998 should be awarded
