SUZIE GAMBA OF NIGERIA AND
ANABA ALEMNA OF GHANA
RECEIVE THE
JEAN E. LOWRIE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AWARD

SEATTLE, May 25, 1998=8BSuzie Gamba of the National Primary Education
Commission in Kaduna, Nigeria and Anaba Alemna of the Department of Library
and Archival Studies at the University of Ghana in Lagon have been awarded
the Jean E. Lowrie Leadership Development Award for 1998 by the
International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) in order to attend
the 27th annual conference of the association in Ramat-Gan, Israel. The
grant provides complimentary conference registration and a cash award of US
$1,000.

In making the award, IASL President Sigrun Hannesdottir (Iceland) noted that=

each recipient is a leader in national school library services, providing
education and training for the development and implementation of school
library programs. Suzie Gamba is spearheading the development of model
school libraries through World Bank funding. Anaba Alemna teaches, advises
and conducts research in the field of school librarianship in Ghana.

The Jean E. Lowrie Leadership Development Grant enables leaders from
developing nations to attend the annual IASL conference; the award is named
for Dr. Jean E. Lowrie, the first president and executive secretary of the
Association.

The International Association of School Librarianship comprises personal and
association members from over 80 countries committed to enabling young
people to develop literary and cultural appreciation and to use information
effectively through the improvement of school libraries and school library
