FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AWARDS
GO TO SCHOOL LIBRARIANS IN AZERBAJAN AND THE U.S.A.

SEATTLE, May 30, 1998 Inna Groudskaya, Director of the Center for
Education and Information Studies at Khazar University in Baku, Azerbajan
and Peter Genco, library media specialist and technology team leader at
Fairview High School in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA have been awarded the
Progressive School Library Media Award for the implementation of innovative
ideas to enhance the lifelong learning skills of students.=20

The International Association of School Librarianship [IASL] makes two
awards, one for developing nations and one for developed nations. The award
consists of a plaque for the recipient's school and US $400. The cash award
will be used to purchase technology that will enhance students' access to
information. It is up to the recipient to select the type and brand of
technology they feel will be most beneficial to their library.=20

The Awards were offered for the first time in 1998 and will be presented at
the IASL annual conference in Ramat-Gan, Israel in July. The awards are
funded through the generosity of the Winnebago Software Company.

In making the announcement, IASL President Sigrun Hannesdottir (Iceland)
praised both the innovations which led to the awards and the use to which
the funds will be put. The Center for Education and Information Studies at
Khazar University is involved in a national educational reform effort
through research and training and its laboratory school; Fairview High
School students work with their teachers and library media specialists to
develop Internet pathfinders on a variety of topics for student and teacher
use. The awards will support and enhance these efforts while recognizing the
leadership of the recipients.

The International Association of School Librarianship comprises personal and
association members from over 80 countries committed to enabling young
people to develop literary and cultural appreciation and to use information
effectively through the improvement of school libraries and school library
programs as a vital component of education. Information about membership and
