FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AWARDS GO TO SCHOOL LIBRARIANS IN AZERBAJAN AND THE U.S.A. SEATTLE, May 30, 1998 Inna Groudskaya, Director of the Center for Education and Information Studies at Khazar University in Baku, Azerbajan and Peter Genco, library media specialist and technology team leader at Fairview High School in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA have been awarded the Progressive School Library Media Award for the implementation of innovative ideas to enhance the lifelong learning skills of students.=20 The International Association of School Librarianship [IASL] makes two awards, one for developing nations and one for developed nations. The award consists of a plaque for the recipient's school and US $400. The cash award will be used to purchase technology that will enhance students' access to information. It is up to the recipient to select the type and brand of technology they feel will be most beneficial to their library.=20 The Awards were offered for the first time in 1998 and will be presented at the IASL annual conference in Ramat-Gan, Israel in July. The awards are funded through the generosity of the Winnebago Software Company. In making the announcement, IASL President Sigrun Hannesdottir (Iceland) praised both the innovations which led to the awards and the use to which the funds will be put. The Center for Education and Information Studies at Khazar University is involved in a national educational reform effort through research and training and its laboratory school; Fairview High School students work with their teachers and library media specialists to develop Internet pathfinders on a variety of topics for student and teacher use. The awards will support and enhance these efforts while recognizing the leadership of the recipients. The International Association of School Librarianship comprises personal and association members from over 80 countries committed to enabling young people to develop literary and cultural appreciation and to use information effectively through the improvement of school libraries and school library programs as a vital component of education.
