GEN: librarians and stereotypes

I hope you all have noted that librarians have hit the big-time.  The New York
Times, Sunday edition, no less, (May 24, 1998) SundayStyles section 9, p. 3
has a large color photograph of what the style-conscious will wear to the
beach or elsewhere this summer:  along with the bikini, the Hermes towel,
flip-flops in bright colors, and manicured, color-free nails for the low-
maintenance look, etc. are "foreign tabloids to make conversation with Euro-
beachmates, 'Silk,' a best-selling romance in Italy, [and, ta-dah,]
rectangular sunglasses for the hip librarian look."
