Please do not blame the LM_NET hosts. It misses the point.
With regard to the continuing experience of phone, fax, mail,
e-mail, and other such intrusions, it strikes me that the solution lies in
a general societal acknowledgement of what should be a given, but obviously
is not, at present. How's this?:

In society, simply because an individual has a phone number, a fax
number, a street address, an e-mail address, or a ZIPPER does not mean
others are invited in. Please, if you would offer mere basic social
consideration--if you would display ANY personal or professional
credibility and proper conduct--unless and until you have been invited in,
know to stay the #&*% out.
(And feigning apologies or seeking to abrogate responsibility after
the fact simply does not cut it, either.)
        Thanks!

A group of people gathers around a table. Soon, it is discovered
that one of the chairs is wobbly--unsafe. People shift--either themselves
or the chair--to avoid the issue. Each time the group meets, the chair
issue is addressed with avoidance, until one day, rather than simply
sloughing off the issue, a member takes it upon him or herself to actually
repair or replace the chair.
The group has a chairperson, at last.
