Someone asked for a hit and I have been lax in getting it posted--sorry. Here are the three responses I received that I still have in my possession. Thanks to each of you who responded. *In regard to onomatopoeia examples, if you have a copy of Laurence Perrine's Sound and Sense (5th ed.), on page 200-201 you will find all sorts of good examples. In case you don't have the books, I'll give you a few -- flame, flicker, flimmer (moving light); glare, gleam, glint, glow, glisten (unmoving light); inch, imp, thin, slim, little, pigmy, chick, kitten (short "i" --smallness); moan, groan, woe, mourn, tool, doom, gloom, moody (long "o" or "oo"--melancholy or sorrow); crack, peck, pick, hack (final "ck" suggesting sudden cessation of movement). *Do you have these brief Web examples? http://www-tep.ucsd.edu/students/Davis/onomatopoeia.html http://mbhs.bergtraum.k12.ny.us/cybereng/lit_terms/onomatopeoia.html http://www.maclab.uvic.ca/writersguide/Pages/LTOnomat.html *Todd Rundgren wrote a song entitled "Onomatopoeia" a few years ago, and I always used to play it in class when I taught poetry as an English teacher. It is GREAT. The whole song is words like splash, fizz, bubble, hic, set to the sounds themselves and to music. I think it was on an album called Skunk in Mink Hollow, or something like that. I hope you can locate it; it's wonderful! *The following set of books may not be helpful for this time around unless you can get access to them through another library, but I think they will be useful for you to order, if this is an ongoing type of request: Using Picture Storybooks to Teach Literary Devices, Vol. 1 and 2, by Susan Hall, published by Oryx. The beauty of using picuture books is that they are short and you can make your point quickly. Also, I imagine that poetry for young children is more likely to have quickly accessible examples of onomatopoeia than poetry for older students and adults.
