SEC: Classics/Contemporary Reads

One of our English teachers who works with college-bound seniors is =
looking for contemporary ADULT titles (fiction or non-) to couple with the =
following classics. (Even if you can think of only _one_ book that might =
fit our need, please respond directly to me.)=20

Hamlet
The Odyssey
Great Expectations
The Republic
Grapes of Wrath
Oedipus
1984
Canterbury Tales
Crime and Punishment
Catcher in the Rye
Pride and Prejudice
The Prince

We have looked at  _From Hinton to Hamlet_, but the focus of that fine =
resource is YA connective novels, not adult novels. The teacher has other =
criteria:

well known author
available in paperback
possible motion picture tie-in
themes that link to the classics mentioned
