GEN: Now we are six and nine!

Dear LM_NET Members,

LM_NET is now just a bit over six years old, and there are over nine
thousand of us listed. We were launched into Cyberspace on June 8, 1992
when Mike added a couple dozen school librarian addresses to the Syracuse
University Listserv group that he had just established, and a few days
later a similar number of addresses were added from my group mail folder
as well.

Since then we have experienced steady growth. Hard to believe, but LM_NET
is one of the oldest K-12 online discussion groups! Thanks for being here
with us.

I thought that the following data might be nice to have for the LM_NET
Breakfast at ALA in Washington, DC. Our first such gathering in mid-June
of 1992 (ALA, San Francisco) had just a dozen participants. Some of those
folks, plus others who were subscribed are still on LM_NET!

Blythe Bennet announced a few days ago that over 100 had registered for
the 1998 gathering in DC! (And we had approximately 100 at NECC in San
Diego last week too.) A nice feeling! Blythe, please share this with
everyone there in DC.

Here are some figures on the growth of LM_NET over our past six years of
existence. These represent only our directly subscribed member addresses.
Many, many more people read LM_NET through reflector or mirror
conferences, as well as our LM_NET Archives. It is difficult to know just
how many of us that there actually are who read and respond to our
messages.
