When I named the HTML and GIF files that I use in my homepage, I gave them descriptive names and didn't worry about the length of the names. I added the extension .html to all the text files. The pages and the graphics all seem to work just fine, though I access them with a Mac only, and have never tried with a DOS based machine. Now, I just took a course, where the instructor said that all files must be named in this format: xxxxxxxx.xxx -- with no more than 8 letters before the dot and no more than three letters in the extension. If they are not named in this way, he claimed, the page and its graphics might not work on every platform. My question: is this correct? I could change all the names and links -- a pain and time-consuming, but not really a problem -- if I have to. After all the work that I have put into designing the page, I certainly want it to be done correctly. Can anyone out there give me the definitive answer about naming web files? Should I rename and relink and reload all my files??
