Hi again! Several times during this past year (my first as a librarian) teachers have told me their students should check out certain types of books only. In one case chapter books only, in another case picture books only, and in a third case only books approximately 100 pages long. I can understand an assignment to read a historical novel etc., but to restrict a class to a particular type of book really concerns me. I'm concerned the teachers don't understand my role as a colleague in the instructional process and the role of the library's diverse book "formats" in appealing in different ways to different students. It almost seems like a form of censorship to restrict access to a particular format of book. I'm curious to know how the group feels about teacher restrictions of this type, if any of you have had similar experiences, and if so, how you dealt with them. I will be glad to post a hit after receiving all your responses. Sherida C.
