I find that in the MARC records included with our orders, some author entries have birth and death dates, and some don't. This of course often results in having two separate listings for one author, one with the date and one without. In the interests of simplifying, I am thinking of leaving out all birth and death dates. What do you elementary school librarians do? Is this a common practice -- or are those dates sacrosanct? I'll post a hit if there is interest.
