Thanks to all of you who sent me your opinion on whether or not to carpet u=
nder the shelves. I received approximately 50 responses, and you were abou=
t evenly divided pro and con. Some of you gave me some good points to cons=
ider before I make my final decision. These are summarized below. I now h=
ave some constructive arguments for the Building and Grounds Supervisor, wh=
en the carpeting gets ordered.

--Most of you agreed that shelves along the perimeter walls that are secure=
ly attached to the wall need not be moved.

--Sturdiness of the shelves should be taken into consideration. Moving alr=
eady shaky shelves could cause more damage. At the very least, the hardwar=
e should be checked and tightened if the shelves are moved.

--Any shelves left in place should be covered with something--plastic, pape=
r, etc.--because recarpeting is very dusty.

--Carpeting under shelves will make the job more expensive, not only in the=
cost of the carpet, but also because of the labor intensity necessary to m=
ove the shelves out, then back.

--If there's already carpeting under the shelves and it is not replaced, wi=
ll the new carpet be of the same thickness or color (in case the shelves ev=
er do get moved)?

--There are carpet squares that can be used. If a square gets stained, or =
shelves get moved, it's much easier to put in the extra squares.

--We don't know what the future will bring. Who knows when they'll enlarge=
your library by knocking down a wall, etc. Better to carpet underneath al=
l the shelves.

=0AAgain, thank you all for your comments. You have been most helpful.
