One idea I could adapt from the article "Why can't a library be more = like a bookstore?" in the March issue of _American Libraries_ is the = suggestion that shelving staff be entrusted with the pleasant duty of = hand selling titles. This is bookstore-ese for recommending things that = a borrower might like to read (either for pleasure or for an = assignment). I have never forbidden a student to recommend a book, but = it never occurred to me to tell them they have a *responsibility* to = recommend books they think someone else would want to read/use. Seems = to me that could make the library a more user-friendly place and also a = more interesting place for student volunteers. The one thing I would = *not* want them to say is, "Oh, we have nothing about that." I would = want them to substitute, "Oh, you'll have to ask Mrs. Wolf about that."
