As part of Read Across America, I taught my fifth graders about Dr.
Seuss. Yes, they knew his books but several stated that they did not
think he was a real person! I think that they confused the Cat in the
Hat ("cartoon") with the name Dr. Seuss. I don't really understand what
they thought but they now know that he was a real person. BTW, I
learned a few interesting facts while researching my lesson. I think I
found these things in one of Sharon McElmeel's "author" books. Thanks,
Sharon, I know you're out there. I use your books A LOT!
1. <Green Eggs and Ham> was written as a bet/dare for Bennett Cerf who
bet Geisel $50 that he couldn't write a book with only 50 words in it.
2. <Marvin K. Mooney...> is an allegory about Richard Nixon who resigned
the day after the book was published.
3. <Yertle the Turtle> is about dictators, probably Hitler.
Geisel was very sensitive to prejudice and was teased as a boy growing
up a German emigrant.
One of the books I used, I think it was the catalog of the Seuss
exhibit, showed Geisel's braille <Cat in the Hat.> My students were
very impressed that he cared enough to make a braille book.
Hope everyone had a nice Seuss day. Our cafeteria "green eggs and ham"
looked disgusting!
