I always put the discarded books out for the students to take. I have to put
a limit on how many they can have. Often a book in miserable condition, or
with outdated information is better than no book at all. And that's what some
of my students have ... no books at all:( I believe that "giving" the
discarded books away, keeps down the theft of circulating books. I have no
figures to back this belief up, however. The teachers are happy to have the
discarded books as part of their classroom collection too. No one wanted the
1985 Grolier's Lands & People, that I was finally able to discard thanks to
Waldenbooks. Can't blame them there.
I thought I would regret giving the books away to students, because a parent
would call to question why I was giving away perfectly good library books.
And that dreaded call would go directly to the Superintendent. That has not
happened in 8 years...knock wood.
