Hello out there,

I am the children's librarian at the Fairfield Public Library, working on
my master's degree in library science.

For a project in my library management class, we are supposed to find a
project in a public or school library, which will help them out in some
way.

I have chosen to tackle the school media specialist's suggestion that
another media specialist be hired in the district. Currently she serves
five elementary schools in the district. The premise of my research is
that one media specialist for five elementary schools is "inadequate" at
best. She's a wonderful media specialist, but jumps around from school to
school. She doesn't really have a chance to do readers advisory, team
teach with teachers, or any of the other things that her job description
lists.

I'm currently in the statistics phase, and am using PLAN FOR PROGRESS and
INFORMATION POWER as well as various job descriptions that I can get ahold
of (through a survey that I sent to school districts with similiar student
enrollment). I have also found several theses in WHAT WORKS:RESEARCH ABOUT
TEACHING AND LEARNING THROUGH THE SCHOOL'S LIBRARY RESOURCE CENTER. In
addition, I have looked at "THE COLORADO STUDY" and TAXONOMIES OF THE
SCHOOL LIBRARY.

Does anyone out there know of any other sources of research or statistical
data on:

1. the correlation between student acheivement and media center staffing.

2. media center staffing "norms" across the country (particularly in Iowa
or the midwest).

Any input from LM_NET members or personal data from your media center
(elementary school level only, please) would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
