Thanks to all who responded to my question about Gale's UXL Science CD.Some
of you asked for me to post the answers I received, so I hope nobody minds
that I put them together here. The consensus is that it is pretty good, but
I decided to return it anyway. I concurr with those who wrote that it
doesn't include much more than a general electronic encyclopedia does
specially not for the price. Anyway, here go some other opinions.

I tried to load the UXL Science CD on my network with the CD tower
(Macintosh version). Unfortunately, this product loaded too slowly and had
a number of problems working in a shared mode. according to the company,
this CD is supposed to be in the process of being remastered & should be
ready in a better form in a couple of months. I do think that the info is
great and the selections seem very complete. I'm going to give this CD
another go after the revision.

Our school previewed it and our science department thought it was great.
We weren't able to purchase it because our server is too old and would not
support windows on our network. We do use UXL Biographies and it is a
great program. I think you would be pleased with UXL Science.

I previewed the UXL Science CD and it looked very worthwhile. I didn't
purchase it this year but have it in my plans for next year. I've been
quite pleased with the UXL products and they network well.

I previewed it and was going to keep it but sent it back because our
Macintosh CD ROM server wouldn't install. To me it is too expensive for a
stand alone. It is suppose to allow 30 simultanious users.

requested and received UXL Science CD on 30-day approval right after
Christmas break. Subsequently, my district bought it. We have it installed
on the CD tower in the library. So far, my feedback is nothing but
positive. It has nicely written bios, film/audio clips, a good
encyclopedia, and a neat timeline feature. It's very user-friendly. A
particularly nice feature is that it provides great bibliographic
information and an additional reading list at the end of each article.

I was impressed enough with this product that I think I'll order UXL Junior
Discovering Authors for next year. Please forward any other info you
receive from other LMnetters.

I ordered it on preview and then gave it to the young man who heads our
science department for his opinion. We both agreed that it does not
provide very much more than an electronic encyclopedia, and it is very
costly. I chose not to purchase it. On the other hand, I did buy UXL
Biographies, which is comprehensive and middle school appropriate. I hope
this helps.

We previewed it at our 7&8 grade school and both the science teachers
and I found it lacking (for its high price), so we returned it. It was
not detailed, and provided little that our other electronic resources
couldn't provide.

The CD will provide good basic information. I did a search on Earthquake
which gave me 27 entires including scientists, timeline event, Richter
scale, tsunami, etc. The pictures, video clips, etc. are a draw. There
are several ways to search for a topic. You can ask for a 30 days preview
which won't allow you to print or save a file to disk. The cost may be a
potential problem. The CD is networkable. Hope this helps.
