In response to the question on books for boys, my ESL son has enjoyed all the books by Dick King-Smith, David Adler's Houdini Magic series, Bailey kids and Magic Treehouse series, and of course, Pilkey's Captain Underpants. One book I highly recommend is a nonfiction title, LOST ON A MOUNTAIN IN MAINE, by Donn Fendler, reprinted in 1992 by Beech Tree books. It takes place in 1939, and recounts the author's experience of being lost for 9 days near Mt. Katahdin when he was 12. There are a few dated words, but it's a gripping story for reluctant readers or any kid. (And much more interesting for a parent to listen to!)
