Well, while no one could help me with statistics, I did get a number of helpful suggestions of books that could be mentioned to hte parent, so I created a list of what I had in my library media center and gave it to the principal so she can pursue it further with this parent if she chooses. THanks to all who gave ideas and here is the list: Great Books for Boys (& Great Books for Girls) Gary Paulsen books Matt Christopher C.S. Lewis JRR Tolkien Star Wars series Animorphs series X-Files series Encyclopedia Brown Danny Dunn James Howe Alfred Slote The Thief--Newbery Honor from last year Rosemary Sutcliffe Robert Peck (Soup books) Charlie Skeddale by Beatty G. Clifton Wisler Chris Crutcher John Christopher The Snake Stone Sees Behind Trees Kenneth Thomasma Out of Control by Mazer Sons of Liberty On My Honor My Side of the Mountain Louis Sachar Avi Hank the Cowdog Judy Blume's Fudge series Hardy Boys Time Warp Trio by Sciesczka Collier & Collier Bruce Coville Myself and another who wrote me both seemed surprised that while we assumed that more books would be written for boys, we found in our own collections that that wasn't teh case after all. Its closer to 50/50 and that there is a noticeable trend the past few years to write for girls and to have more female authors who write for that particular audience. Interesting.
