A word of warning on using ping to verify an address. Ping will not tell you if the address is static (stays the same every time you connect to the network) or dynamic (can change every time you connect to the network). For the purposes of the request, I'm assuming that the service needs a static address. And may need the whole address. This can only be found by going into the information contained in various places in the computer itself. On the MAC, check MACTCP, in Win95, use properties in network neighborhood to check the TCPIP information. Win3.1 has the same information scattered in various *.ini or *.cfg files depending on the network software that you use. This is not to say that Ping isn't neat. It can also be used to verify whether a machine is live or not when you get those annoying 'no DNS' messages while browsing. Dan Robinson Indexing Services H.W.
