I've seen this question asked a few times on lmnet, so I thought I'd share the answer with everyone. What do the sequential numbers mean on the copyright page? (10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1). These numbers are a code for what print run a book is in. The first print run of a book begins with all the numbers intact, and one number is taken away with each new print run. For example, when _Any Title_ is first published with a print run of 5,00 copies (the majority of titles do not begin with huge print runs!), all 10 numbers would be on the copyright page. If the book sells out and the publisher orders a new print run, the number 1 would be removed, and so on. A new print run is not a new edition, which involves major changes in the work, although a new print run may (if the cost is not too high) include correcting minor factual/typesetting errors.
