Thanks to all those who responded to my question.  Believe it or not, I
wasn't the only one who didn't know the answer!  For all of those who
replied and said they didn't know either, but were afraid to ask, I have
copied one of the replies below so now everyone on this list will know!

"Brackets are the pairings for the NCAA basketball tournament. It's a
diagram with all 64 teams and who they play. The winner advances to the
next level until eventually there are the sweet sixteen, elite eight and
final four. It's easy to keep track of who plays whom and the winners on
the bracket diagram."
