Our middle school is selecting a company for the magazine campaign next fall. One of the companies is offering a 60% discount to the library on subscriptions to any of the magazines on their list. The other two say they can't do that. In discussing the issue at one of our department meetings, our most recent library school graduate said she vaguely recalled something in one of her first classes about that being illegal. Thinking it was probably an Iowa law, I posed the question to the Iowa media specialist listserv, SLIK-12. The responses I received referred to a judicial decision against Readers' Digest, but no one could quote documentation against school subscriptions with these companies. This appears then to be a national situation. Does anyone know specifics--either law or judicial case--that govern this situation? I will post a HIT with what I find out. Thank you. I appreciate how there seems always to be someone who can help in this group.
