laptops for college kids?

I realize this is not a library-related question, but I need to impose on your
technology expertise, please!  Do you think it is better to send a kid to
college with a laptop or desktop computer?  My husband & I are trying to
decide what to do for a graduation gift for his son and we are stumped.
He will be living in a dorm and we are concerned about security, as well
as convenience and performance.

What has been your experience?  Thank you so much (in advance!) for your
help.
