Hi Folks--
A third grade teacher in my school wanted some good books to help do a le=
sson=0Aon recognizing the difference between FACT and OPINION. Ahhh. Easy=
, I thought.=0AThen I got stumped.

There's Seymour Simon's Animal Fact, Animal Fable, but that's really abou=
t our=0Amisconceptions, such as "Do ostriches bury their heads in the san=
d?" There are=0Abooks of superstitions, but that's not really right eithe=
r. We have books like=0ABody Sense, Body Nonsense that talk about things =
people believe are true, such=0Aas "An apple a day keeps the doctor away,=
" and defines the truth in our=0Abeliefs about our health. None of these =
quite fits.

She loved the lesson I did on Annie Oakley, using Debbie Dadey's Shooting=
=0AStar, which is full of facts and exaggerations, where the kids had to =
try to=0Adetermine which of the events really happened. That's not opinio=
n either,=0Athough it dovetails into it.

I thought of Junie B. Jones and Some Sneaky Peeky Spying by Barbara Park =
where=0Ashe sees her teacher snitching a grape from the grocery store. Ge=
tting there.=0AAnd Hilary and the Troublemakers by Kathleen Leverich, but=
 that's more fact=0Aversus fantasy.

Any interesting ideas here? Something to help kids differentiate between =
"You=0Aare wearing a green sweater," and "I think your green sweater is v=
ery nice."=0ALet me know if I've missed something incredibly obvious or i=
f you know=0Asomething wonderfully obscure. My brain cells are fading out=
... It must be=0ASPRING! TIA!
