8th grade fiction for boys

I've had a request from a "mom". Seems her son's English teacher likes to
require High school level novels. Mom feels that her son is missing out on
some great MS books. He reads at a somewhat lower level than his
classmates. Can you recommend some good recreational reading books for him?
