Children's lit references certainly are everywhere. Just tonight my husband, my parents and I were watching a VCR movie (I think it was called Airforce One). In one scene during a telephone conversation the President said, "If you give a mouse a cookie..." and the Vice-President replied, "Then he wants a glass of milk." Since I am the only one familiar with Children's lit, I am the only one who understood that he was telling her that satisfying one demand would only lead to another. I did, however, receive a number of requests to post a hit, so there is interest in this question. All of the websites I've visited have just repeated what I already know about the copyright law, but don't mention how people are interpreting that law in relation to "fair use" of images electronically scanned from copyrighted materials. Here is a compilation of those few answers I did receive: **************************************** You should definitely check out http://www.benedict.com It's a fantastic site full of information about copyright issues. It won't be able to tell you what other libraries are doing, but it can definitely answer your questions as to what is and isn't legal. **************************************** While we don't have a scanner in our public area, we would put the same copyright notice on it that we do for any self-service copier, microfilm reader/printer, or computer printer. ***************************************** I've been concerned about this question, too. Isn't there something about electronically changing the format of a material (i.e. print image into computer graphic format) that makes it illegal to scan copyrighted images? I'd be concerned about putting one in my library. ***************************************** We have had a flat bed scanner for over a year. I put a copyright notice on it. The purpose of the scanner was to be able to copy color pictures for classroom projects. This worked fine until I had a couple of kids copying black and white text material. So I put another notice on it saying they had to show me what they wanted to scan before they scanned it. That stopped most of the copying that could be done better at another copier. We love it! **************************************** That's it! Anyone else want to contribute idea?
