Dear LM_NET Colleagues--  Please join us. Plan ahead for...

LM_Conf scheduled for next Tuesday, March 24. It is co-sponsored by LM_NET
and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and is hosted by
the Information Institute of Syracuse (home of AskERIC). This event is the
sixth in a series of tests of LM_Conf, realtime conference using Internet
Relay Chat (IRC) (software must be downloaded in advance).

The panel discussion will be moderated by Marjorie Pappas, Coordinator of
the Division of Library Science at The University of Northern Iowa in
Cedar Falls, Iowa, co-developer of Pathways to Knowledge (TM): Follett's
Information Skills Model. Marjorie has arranged for three highly
knowledgeable guests -- Betty Marcoux, David Loertscher, and Alice Yucht,
all of whom are known for their work in Information Literacy.

In addition to their many other accomplishments and contributions to our
profession: Betty Marcoux is chair of the the AASL/AECT National
Guidelines Vision Committee, which is preparing the Information Literacy
Standards for Student Learning; David Loertscher was recently appointed to
the new Library/Media Standards Committee of the National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS); Alice Yucht is a school
librarian, and author of FLIP-It: An Information Skills Strategy for
Student Researchers.

In order to participate, you will need to download IRC Chat software. This
is explained in detail at:  http://chat.syr.edu
  Login as a registered user,
    with the userid: lm
    the password is: live

This will take you to the LM_Live page.  Just follow the instructions
given there to download and configure the software. (In the event that you
are unable to download the software from there, look for the chat clients
at http://shareware.com)

Since this is a test, it is limited to the first 150 persons who get there
and get logged in. It is recommended that you obtain the software well
ahead of time, and practice in the LM_Chat room.

Timeline and Schedule:

Between now and March 24th, go to the LM_Live! website and download the
appropriate software for chatting. Practice by entering the LM_Chat area
and trying to chat with someone. If you are alone, try saying something to
yourself.

March 24th Schedule East Coast Standard Time Zone (U.S.):
7:45 p.m.  until 8:00 p.m.
8:00 p.m.  Get logged in to the LM_Conf site
8:05 p.m.  Introduction of panelists and opening brief statements
8:10 p.m.  Question and answer (panelists and hosts)
8:40 p.m.  Questions from audience
9:00 p.m.  End of session, time to log off

Remember, only the first 150 persons will be admitted.

You will undoubtedly need to download and configure your chat software
prior to the LM_Conf panel discussion scheduled for Wednesday, January 14.
Please do expect to be able to simply download and use your software to go
right into the panel discussion. It requires a bit of time to configure,
and also some practice.

Here is what wou will need to do, after you have your IRC chat software
installed and configured: Using your IRC software, just go to the IRC
LM_Live site, and enter the LM_Conf channel.

The IRC LM_Live! site is at:
orb.syr.edu
port 6667

You willthen  need to go into the channel: LM_Conf, using the command:
   /join #lm_conf

Please remember, it is limited to the first 150 persons who get there and
get logged in.
