Our Latin teacher was told long ago by his father that the Ivy League got its name from the fact that there were originally four members - "IV" in Roman numerals, and when Yale joined as the fifth member, they added a "Y", making it IVY. He can remember that two of the original four were Harvard and Princeton, but can't remember the other two. Have you ever heard this story, or is it maybe an early urban legend? Do any of y'all know the answer? I'd love to impress him with your vast stores of knowledge!
