I collect old cookbooks. I have a (badly damaged but readable) copy of
the original Fannie Farmer cookbook published in the 1880s. Where else
will you find the directions for getting rust stains out of
linsey-woolsey or what wood to use in the stove or how to plan your
cooking so that all items of the meal arrive at the table still hot? I
have another one from the late '30s with a chapter on how to stretch
ration coupons as well as cake recipe variations that used only one egg
and less than 1/2 cup sugar. It gives tips on how to get the most for
your money at the butcher shop ("keep a close watch as the butcher trims
your meat and have him give you the trimmings for a hearty stew"). The
handwritten comments in the margins are also priceless! I love these
books!
