Greetings,

In northwestern Pennsylvania, most schools purchase Internet access through
our regional education center.

In reply to Deanna Schumm's posting regarding Bess, our service provider is
also in the process of switching to the Bess Proxy server. Once the
individual workstations are configured to recognize the Bess Proxy server,
the major problem we have experienced is with access to paid subscription
services such as EBSCO, where we can get to the site and then experience
problems getting to the specific. There are a few searchs, such as sexual
harassment, that are completely blocked in the regular search engines.
Also, Bess blocks www.hotmail.com, where 48 percent of my students have a
web based free email account.

If one must live with Bess, there are two things that can be done (as it
has been explained to me):

1. Your service provider can give you override passwords allowing for a
timed searches. Once the user is in, s/he can do an unrestricted search
for whatever time is worked out between you and your service provider. I
am still awaiting an answer on how many simultaneous users can access via a
single password.

2. Your service provider can issue override IP addresses (special classes
in blocks). Of course this creates much more work and timely updates for
whoever configures your workstations.

Hope this is of help!
Peter
