Thanks to those who responded to my question regarding the "real" mother
goose. A couple responded that it was Charles Perrault from France who
recorded many stories (see # 4).
I also received this from Debra Balsam from VA:

According to The Annotated Mother Goose it could have been:
1. Bertha, the Queen Bertha who died in 783, mother of
Charlemangne
2. Bertha - wife of Robert II of France 970-1031
3. Mother Goose is certainly French dating back to 1650
4. The popularity of Mother Goose dates from 1697 after the
publication of tales by Perrault
5. Mother Goose appears in a book published by J. Pote of
Charing Cross in 1729
6. Mother Goose could have been American - Elizabeth Foster
Goose of Boston - 1692-1756
An English Man who collected the tales was not mentioned.
