Hi folks, I would like some input on this, please. I recently ordered, and received, 40 books in the Visual Geography Series. I am generally quite pleased with the series, and the teachers seem happy with it. However, I have a problem with the book about China, that being that there is no mention at all of Tibet ever having been its own country. I know that this offends me personally, and seems to me to be withholding information; what I'm looking for is input on whether I am being objective about this. The index lists Tibet...and says, "see Xizang." The only mention of Tibet as having ever been Tibet is "Attention focused on the Autonomous Region of Xizang. In 1950--when the region was still known as Tibet--the Chinese had invaded. Frequent uprisings occurred in the 1950s as the Tibetans resisted full integration into Chinese culture." (p. 39). There is no mention of the Dalai Lama in exile, no explanation of the differences in culture, or mention that the Tibetans still consider themselves to be Tibetan, and not Chinese. Does anyone have any insight on this for me? Or, barring that, a recommendation for another book about China? Or both, even :-). This is driving me NUTS. Thank you.
